According to Obsidian Entertainment head Feargus Urquhart in a recent Bloomberg report, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 did not meet sales expectations. As a result, Urquhart stated that the studio is reevaluating its game development approach, considering shorter development timelines.
“They’re not disasters,” Urquhart says. “I’m not going to say this was a kick in the teeth. It was more like: ‘That sucks. What are we learning?’” He continued, “We think a lot about how much we put into the games, how much we spend on them, and how long they take.”
Despite these two titles falling short of Microsoft’s sales expectations, Grounded 2, which launched last year, was a significant success. It required much less development time, though the game is still in early access.
The report also noted that Obsidian is not currently working on a third Outer Worlds title. However, the studio plans to focus on a mix of large and small projects in the coming years, including new games and additional content for The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2. Additionally, Obsidian intends to continue creating games within the Avowed universe.
