At Xbox’s X019 event, inXile Entertainment announced that Wasteland 3 will be released on May 19, 2020 in both digital format and in retail stores.
Wasteland 3 was featured at Xbox’s X019 event in London, where Interplay founder and Wasteland co-creator Brian Fargo took to the stage to introduce a new trailer, announce the May 19 release date, and officially kick off pre-orders.
The legendary Wasteland series pioneered the post-apocalypse genre in video games, and Wasteland 3 returns players to the role of Desert Rangers, lawmen in a post-nuclear world working to rebuild civilization from the ashes. Trading the dry, dusty heat of the American southwest for a perpetually frozen Colorado, Wasteland 3 features new locations, a customizable vehicle, streamlined combat, and two player co-op as a first for the series.
First introduced in 1988, the original Wasteland was developed by Interplay and published by Electronic Arts as one of the first games set within a post-apocalyptic America destroyed by nuclear holocaust. Critically acclaimed and successful commercially, Wasteland was to be followed by two separate sequels. However, Electronic Arts turned Fountain of Dreams into an unrelated game, and the second game in development by Interplay was canceled.
That bump in the road may have been fate, however, for the general concept and setting of Wasteland then became the basis for Interplay’s famed and celebrated 1997 RPG, Fallout, which then extended into the Fallout series. Wasteland did receive a sequel in 2014 with the release of Wasteland 2, and Wasteland 3 is set for release on Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 4, Windows, Mac, and Linux on May 19, 2020.
In addition, pre-orders are now available including bonus items which will give players a head start in the wasteland. The pre-order bonus items include the Ranger General’s Hat and Glasses, a Polished Ranger Badge, and some Snow Camo Weapons. Pre-orders are available at Wasteland3.com.
