Tencent To Continue the Development of System Shock 3

Tencent Holding has announced the acquisition of  System Shock 3 publishing rights from OtherSise Entertainment, the studio had secured the publishing rights in 2019, but due to undisclosed motives, the studio has moved on from the franchise. Tencent will now continue the development of the game.

As the situation might be somewhat confusing, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at OtherSide Entertainment, Walter Somol explains that they are keeping the IP. “As a smaller indie studio, it had been challenging for us to carry the project on our own. We believe Tencent’s deep capabilities and expertise as a leading game company will bring the franchise to new heights.”

“We were a small team and knew we couldn’t compete with current immersive sims in production quality and breadth, so we had to be creative and clever and weird. And we were on our way to make something unique and possibly fun, but probably not what the audience was hungry for,” continued the source. Now, Tencent will be able to assign a new team to the project, and persevere with the work that has already been done.

Back in February 2019, OtherSide Entertainment bought back the publishing rights of System Shock 3 from Starbreeze, who retained the right since 2017. Videogamer reports the struggle of OtherSide Entertainment in the recent months, several developers had updated their LinkedIn profiles, apparently, they are not working anymore with the indie studio. Reportedly the studio is undergoing a process of “expensive experimentation”

At the moment of writing, there is little known of the development of the game, the most recent information tracks backs September 2019, when OtherSide Entertainment revealed a teaser trailer of the game.

System Shock 3 is the latest in the series of classic, award-winning games, it’s currently in development under the direction of industry legend Warren Spector and a dream team behind such landmarks as the original System Shock, Thief: The Dark Project and Deus Ex.
