Insomniac knocked it out of the park during the PlayStation 5 reveal event by showcasing extended Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart gameplay. The legendary duo is back and dealing with their biggest disaster yet. The entire universe is ripping apart at the seams, causing rifts to open within the fabric of time and space. The generous dose of gameplay footage revealed new features and environments, as well as the classic Ratchet and Clank side-strafing combat and interesting new weapons. Here are eight awesome details.

  1. First Entry to the Series Since 2016

Rift Apart is the first Ratchet and Clank game to come out since the 2016 remake of the first, and it seems it was worth the wait. The game will be a full-fledged continuation of Ratchet and Clank’s story as players find out why the universe seems to be exploding with chaos. While the 2016 remake was well received, there’s no doubt fans have been waiting a long time for a sequel. They’ll have to wait a little longer, though, as there’s no release date yet.

  1. Interdimensional Travel

The dimensions of the game’s universe have been weakening and verge on collapse. The gameplay displayed Ratchet and Clank jumping through rifts to cross between unique worlds. The duo started in a forest with organic alien life before being chased off into other zones, such as a futuristic metropolis, rocky canyons, a grungy city district, and even a pirate ship. This gameplay is possible with the new SSD technology incorporated into the PS5, allowing seamless loading of scenes.

  1. Ray Tracing

Creative director Marcus Smith mentioned ray tracing while talking about Rift Apart during the press reveal. He says they’re doing things they’ve never been able to do before, such as the aforementioned interdimensional travel, as well as adding ray trace reflections to the game. The ray tracing can be seen reflecting off surfaces such as walls and floors. It’s especially noticeable on Clank during the trailer’s last cutscene where he’s laying on the floor after falling through a rift. Walking on a floor alight with reflections is awesome!

  1. Worlds Full of Life

Another benefit of the PS5’s hardware is the ability to fill worlds with life, including hostile and non-hostile NPCs. Gameplay presents Ratchet and Clank walking through a building brimming with civilians. One of them even says, “Hey look, it’s Ratchet and Clank!” Fans of the series remember when planets had enemies and little else, but this is a next-gen Ratchet and Clank so prepare to see multitudes of unique NPCs and creatures.

  1. Classic Ratchet and Clank Action

The trailer shows Ratchet and Clank landing on a pirate ship after crossing a rift. The crew begins firing and players get their first glimpse of the series’ signature move—the shooting side-strafe. Gameplay also showcases the timeless weapon wheel, explosive boxes, and arena style fights. Marcus mentions the arsenal will be more exciting than ever due to the dual sense controller enhanced feedback. Safe to say fans of the series will not be disappointed, it’s Ratchet and Clank for the next generation.

  1. New Armaments

Ratchet can be seen using some of the new arsenal in action. The throwable Topiary Sprinkler is a grenade capable of freezing enemies by lancing frozen water at them. Following that up with a Shatterbomb grenade will combo and literally shatter frozen enemies. The Enforcer looks like a heavy-duty shotgun that shoots electric blasts at close range. There’s also a machine pistol capable of rapid firing green projectiles, though, the gameplay doesn’t give a name. These are only the tip of the iceberg!

  1. New Blink Mechanics

Ratchet uses a grappling hook on yellow rifts to teleport to their location. It’s an interesting addition to the flow of combat, as players can use this “blink” to reposition themselves for an offensive or get out of a tight spot. The gameplay video displays its usefulness for flanking enemies and getting out of blaster fire. Purple rifts also exist, acting as spawn points for waves of enemies. Awareness of both yellow and purple rift locations will help combat proficiency.

  1. A New Lombax

By the end of the trailer Clank falls out of a rift alone, slamming face first into a new world. As he looks around for his best friend, a female Lombax lands next to him. With silver-blue fur and a robotic prosthetic arm, this character is an interesting addition. Ratchet was supposed to be the last of his kind so it’s exciting to think what forces are at play here. Maybe it’s a parallel universe where the last remaining Lombax is a female. Either way, Rift Apart looks promising.
