PlatinumGames Changing Approach To Game Creation

PlatinumGames has several games currently in the pipeline for release across this year, including Sol Cresta, Babylon’s Fall, and the long-awaited Bayonetta 3. In an interview with the newly appointed President of the studio, Atsushi Inaba, he discussed his goals for the future of the company that seems to lean more toward games like Babylon’s Fall, their first live-service title, over games like Bayonetta, which helped put the studio on the map.

In the interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, which was translated by VGC, Inaba discussed an upcoming game beyond the three this year, Project G.G., which still remains shrouded in mystery. He did however offer some context for the project:

Project G.G. is still in the stage of testing various things, so I can’t tell you much about it, but when it comes to future game production, we want to focus on creating games that are different from the past. I would like to focus on creating games that can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.

What exactly his statement means is up for interpretation, but he did go on to draw a direct comparison to games like Sol Cresta and Bayonetta, saying that new projects would be “different in terms of their structure,” to those aforementioned titles.

The “enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time,” statement is what has drawn some focus, implying that the studio intends to dive into more live-service titles, similar to upcoming Babylon’s Fall, with Project G.G. seeming to follow in that vein. This sentiment could simply imply that PlatinumGames intends to try new ideas and concepts instead of simply relying on what has worked in the past.

Inaba further stated that in large part, these changes are in part a response to market changes:

However, the projects that we are trying to create for the future will be different in terms of their structure. Considering the changes in the market over the next five years or so, I think it is absolutely necessary for us to do this. I’m sorry for being so vague, but I think that’s all I can tell you right now.

It is impossible to know just what these changes will amount to currently, but hopefully, PlatinumGames is not putting too many eggs in the Babylon’s Fall basket given they have yet to gather hard numbers on its success, given the game is set to release on March 3, 2022.
