Overwatch – Mercy Challenge, Valkyrie Short Story

Overwatch fans around the world have long clamored for more lore and stories revolving around their favorite heroes, and now they have some in the form of a new short story and an in-game event.

Mercy’s Recall challenge will run from November 12 until December 2, 2019, and gives players the opportunity to earn several rewards: eight sprays, a player icon, and the legendary Dr. Ziegler skin.

As with most recent in game challenges, Mercy’s Recall challenge requires players to win up to nine games in Quick Play, Competitive Play, or Arcade modes for prizes. Three wins earns one player icon, six wins earns two new sprays, and nine won games awards players with the Dr. Ziegler skin for Mercy, which features the doctor in her lab coat—a request often seen on the official Overwatch forums.

Players who want more rewards can tune into participating Twitch streams to unlock more Mercy cosmetics. Two hours of viewing earns a spray, four hours earns two additional sprays, and the six-hour mark will grant players three more new sprays.

In addition to the in-game rewards, Blizzard has published a new short story, Valkyrie, written by loremaster Michael Chu. In Valkyrie, Mercy speaks with old friends Ana Amari and Jack Morrison ahead of and during an attack by the forces of Talon on the city of Cairo, Egypt. The pacifistic doctor has seen enough of war, and struggles with the need to don the Valkyrie suit once more to alleviate the suffering of those around her.

Mercy’s Recall challenge comes just two weeks after the announcement of Overwatch 2 at this year’s BlizzCon, offering fans another juicy bit of lore to hold them over while the story-heavy sequel/expansion is still in development. Later this week, Gaming Instincts will feature an opinion piece by writer Jennifer Anderson, discussing Overwatch 2 and what it means for the future of the franchise as a whole.
