While not the biggest selling point of the PlayStation 5, one of the features touted while moving to promote the next-gen console was that its faceplate would be interchangeable. This would, theoretically, remove the need for ‘special’ console bundles as basically, every game could simply get themed faceplates that don’t require players to purchase another console. This also offers move variety for players to express themselves through their consoles.
Despite this feature being promoted Sony took their time to roll the feature out, even hitting third-party manufacturers with cease and desists due to them being ready to deliver on the promise while Sony was taking their time. Finally, a month after Sony finally patented faceplates, we have gotten our first look at the first roll-out of the PlayStation 5 faceplates.
These first colors are simply that, color swaps for your system each with a galactic theme. The colors themselves are Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple, Cosmic Red, as well as Midnight Black. Each color will also coincide with the release of a controller of the same color. While the Pink, Blue, and Purple are brand new the Red and Black faceplates are meant to add to the previous two colors of controllers that were released for the console. These were announced via the PlayStation Blog.
For those concerned, there will be two versions of each faceplate released for both the PlayStation 5 with a disk tray, as well as the digital PlayStation 5 that does not have that. They will ship independently of the controllers as well, but this allows for more mixing and matching of colors.
These faceplates and controllers will be available starting in January 2022, in USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines. Currently, two of the models, the red and the black, can be pre-ordered here and will cost $54.99.
