Final Fantasy VII Remake Coming To Epic Games Store

Earlier this year a leak from the Epic Games Store seemed to suggest that an Alan Wake Remaster, as well as Final Fantasy VII Remake, were on their way to the platform. The Alan Wake Remaster, which had only been rumored before then was eventually confirmed, with a release in October, assumably in anticipation for the Alan Wake II announcement that would come at the Video Game Awards.

The Video Game Awards also saw the confirmation that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the enhanced version of the game featuring an additional narrative with Yuffie, was finally making its way to the PC and will be available on the Epic Games Store next week.

When initially announced, Final Fantasy VII was a console exclusive for the PlayStation 4 and was confirmed to have a timed exclusivity deal in place between Square Enix and Sony. When the time for that deal was expected to end, a year later in 2021, it was stated that the deal had been extended into 2022 and that the new version and content of the game again was exclusive to the PlayStation 5.

Epic Games Store has also been no stranger to timed exclusivity deals, having done so in the past for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Control in the past.  Most likely next year will see the game release on Steam, as well as Xbox consoles through the exclusivity deals in place for the game, have never been made fully clear to the public.

Final Fantasy VII Remake features the Midgard segment from the original 1997 game, turning what was roughly 2-3 hours worth of story into a game that is roughly 30-40 hours, as well as flushing out minor characters. While initially this approach was met with ire from the community, the title went on to receive large amounts of praise, including winning best role-playing game during the 2020 Video Game Awards.
