American Mcgee’s Alice, the horror-themed video game take on Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carrol, is set to get a live-action television adaptation. It was also announced that Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter was attached to write and produce the project. People might remember that David Hayter has a resume of high-profile writing credits, including the original X-Men movie and its sequel.
David Hayter talked about the project to the Hollywood Reporter, stating:
American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns game series is a groundbreaking reimagining of the classic tale. It takes you into the heart of a corrupted Wonderland and throws light into shadowy corners the world has never seen. I am beyond excited to bring this world of madness and wonder to a global audience.
American Mcgee himself followed up in a statement, saying of Hayter:
David Hayter brings imagination, experience, and stealth sneaking skills gained through successful missions in film, TV, and video games. a unique combination sure to make this adventure into Wonderland a successful one for the franchise and the fans. I am excited to be working with him and know the Alice fans will welcome him with mad affection.
The story of American Mcgee’s Alice takes place after the second novel with Alice awakening from a dream of Wonderland only to find that her house is burning down. While she is able to save herself her family dies and the shock of this puts her in a catatonic state, being placed in a mental institution. The player must then control Alice as she journeys into a twisted and warped version of Wonderland as she attempts to free herself from her mental state.
A sequel, Alice: Madness Returns was released several years after the first game to a mixed reception, though it has been viewed more positively since then. Due to this American Mcgee has struggled with getting a third game and prequel, Alice: Asylum, off the ground. Currently, he has a Patreon for the game and a finished script but has not been able to get the game to the development stage since.
With this TV series on the horizon, and EA willing to return to single-player franchises such as Jedi: Fallen Order and the Dead Space reboot, hopefully, Alice might soon get the revival it deserves. Interestingly, American Mcgee’s Alice holds the distinction of being the first M-rated game produced by EA.
